Serengeti wildebeest migration
- Tanzania
The great Serengeti wildebeest migration is the movement of vast
numbers of the Serengeti's wildebeest, accompanied by large
numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant's gazelle,
Thompson's gazelle, eland and impala. These move in an annual
pattern which is fairly predictable. They migrating throughout
the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing and, it's now
thought, better quality water. The precise timing of the
Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the
rainfall patterns each year – here we explain how the broad
pattern works.
This migration, month by month, is shown on the map on the right
side of this page – the moving red represents the main herds. In
addition – see a more detailed map of the Serengeti showing the
park's boundaries and the camps and lodges – or an interactive
satellite map of the Serengeti which shows the safari camps and
lodges in the Serengeti area.
Month by month: the Serengeti wildebeest migration
The short rains begin around early November. A little after
this, in late November and December, the herds of the wildebeest
migration arrive on the short-grass plains of the Serengeti.
These are south and east of Seronera, around Ndutu and include
the north of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Dispersed across
these plains, wildebeest and zebra are everywhere – feeding on
the fresh, nutritious grasses. They stay here through January,
February and March, with most wildebeest calves born in a short
window around February. Gradually they spread west across these
plains, then around April they start their great migration
north.
By May the Serengeti's wildebeest all seem to be moving north,
migrating to seek fresh grazing and water. The area around Moru
Kopjes and west of Seronera is then hectic with a series of
moving columns, often containing hundreds of thousands of
animals – joined by many zebra, and a scattering of Thompson's
and Grant's gazelles.
Some of the migration then head due north of Seronera, but most
are usually further west. Around June the wildebeest migration
is often halted on the south side of the Grumeti River, which
has some channels which block or slow their migration north. The
wildebeest then congregate there, in the Western Corridor, often
building up to a high density before crossing the river. The
river here is normally a series of pools and channels, but it's
not continuous – and so whilst they always represent an annual
feast for the Grumeti River's large crocodiles, these aren't
usually quite as spectacular as the crossings of the Mara River,
further north.
The wildebeest migration continues moving northwards during July
and August, often spreading out across a broad front: some
heading through Grumeti Reserve and Ikorongo, others north
through the heart of the Serengeti National Park.
September sees the herds spread out across the northern
Serengeti, where the Mara River provides the migration with its
most serious obstacle. This river gushes through the northern
Serengeti from Kenya's adjacent Maasai Mara Game Reserve.
Watching the frantic herds of the wildebeest migration crossing
the Mara River can be very spectacular; there are often scenes
of great panic and confusion. It's common to see herds cross the
Mara River north on one day, and then back south a few days
later.
By October the wildebeest herds are migrating again with more
accord: all are heading south, through western Loliondo and the
Serengeti National Park's Lobo area, returning to the green
shoots which follow the rains on the short-grass plains of the
southern Serengeti in November.
Then the whole Serengeti Wildebeest migration starts again …

Game Reserve and stretches as far as Lake Victoria to the West.
Serengeti name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning
'endless plains'. Accommodation is in Serena Lodges.

The Ngorongoro Crater is often
called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the
World,’ a visit to the crater is a main draw card for tourists
coming to Tanzania and a definite world-class attraction. The
Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is home of Ngorongoro Crater.
It was formed some 2.5 million years ago from a volcanic
mountain sinking due to inactivity, and was initially thought to
be higher than Tanzania’s famous Kilimanjaro. The crater has
evolved into a unique and integral part of Tanzania’s
eco-system. The crater is actually a caldera, measures 22.5 km’s
across and the rim walls stand 600m high. Views from within and
from the rim are breathtaking (as can be seen from the picture).
The crater houses 30,000 animals and a large variety of birds,
which rarely move from the area due to the availability of water
through wet and dry seasons
Day 6: Back to Arusha

Masai Mara Animal migration - Serengeti
Wildebeest Migration Safaris
The endless plains of east Africa are the setting for the
world’s greatest wildlife spectacle - the 1.5 million animal
ungulate (wildebeest) migration. From the vast Serengeti plains
to the champagne colored hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara over 1.4
million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly
tracked by Africa’s great predators, migrate in a clockwise
fashion over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain ripened
grass.
There is no real beginning or end to a wildebeest's journey. Its
life is an endless pilgrimage, a constant search for food and
water. The only beginning is at the moment of birth. An
estimated 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during a six week
period early each year - usually between late January and
mid-March.
The Migratory Path
DECEMBER, JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH The Serengeti National Park /
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is arguably the most impressive
wildlife sanctuary in the world. During the months December
through March the seemingly unending plains of the southern
Serengeti and the Conservation Area are inhabited by enormous
herds of wildebeest and zebra. The great herds graze on rain
ripened grass.
In the calving season (late January through mid March) the herds
concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei plains (Southern Serengeti /
Ngorongoro Conservation Area) attracting the attention of
predators like lion, cheetah and hyena.
During this period the migration is best observed from Ndutu
Safari Lodge, Kusini Camp or any of several private tented camps
used by mobile safaris such as our "Classic Tanzanian Tented
Safari". These include campsites in the Ndutu/Naabi area.
APRIL, MAY During the months April and May the depleted plains
are unable to sustain the endless herds. The migration, sweeping
west and north, moves from the short grass plains of the
southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the long
grass plains and woodland of the Serengeti’s western Corridor,
almost to Lake Victoria.
This period is during the long rains and is considered off
season for wildlife viewing in east Africa as roads are often
impassable. Ndutu Safari Lodge, Kusini Camp and the Serengeti
Serena Lodge are fine for wildlife viewing during this time. So
are campsites in the Ndutu/Naabi area.
JUNE By the end of May the wildebeest have exhausted the Western
Corridor’s best pastures and the herds must move further north.
Entering the Lamai Wedge and the Mara Triangle breeding occurs
May through June.
This is a transitional period between the rains and the dry
season. The Serengeti Serena is a central, easily accessible
lodge for viewing the migration at this time. Grumeti River
Camp, Migration Camp and Kirawira Camp are also options.
Seronera and Moru area campsites are best.
JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER By July the countless herds
have amassed along the swollen Mara River - a final barrier from
the short sweet grasses of the Masai Mara. Sometimes the
crossing place they have chosen is shallow allowing the majority
of animals to pass safely. In other areas the waters boil with
drowning wildebeest and slashing crocodiles.
Between July and October the wildebeest reside in the Mara. We
recommend Governor's Il Moran Tented Camp as the leading safari
camp in the Masai Mara. Other tented camps include Governor's
Main Camp, Little Governor’s Camp, Bataluer Camp, and Mara River
Camp. Tanzanian lodges recommended during this time include
Kirawira Tented, Migration Camp, and Grumeti River Camp.
Kirawira and Moru area campsites are best.
NOVEMBER The arrival of the short rains call the migration
southward. During the short rains of November the wildebeest
migration is best viewed from either Lobo Wildlife Lodge or
Klein’s Camp. Campsites in the Lobo area are best.
As November ends the migration is making its way back to the
southern Serengeti and early in the year they once again give
birth. The circle of life is complete.
Note - the migration is a natural event and the timing varies
month by month; year by year.
Thank you and enjoy
Mount Kilimanjaro
Climbing Routes
Marangu Route 8 Days Affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola
route", Marangu is by far the most popular route to the summit
of Kilimanjaro. This could partly be as a result of the fact
that the Marangu is the least expensive route, but more so,
perhaps the fact that it is possible to do the Marangu route in
6 days, thereby getting to the summit one day earlier than on
the Machame route.
Machame Route Sometimes called the Whisky Route. This is a
popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain
a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau.
It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the
Southern Icefields to join the Barafu Route to the summit.
Umbwe Route
The Umbwe route is one of the
shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach.
It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on
Kilimanjaro. It is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively
fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful.
Lemosho Route
This is the longest and most remote
route to Kilimanjaro. After beautiful forests and moorlands it
crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route.
Groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as
the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo,
elephant and other game.
Rongai Route
This remote and less frequently used route is the second easiest
route to Kilimanjaro. The approach to the mountain is from the
less-forested north side and the descent is by the Marangu
Route. There are several variations, the one described below is
a longer route taking in Mawenzi Tarn.
Shira Route
The Shira route, approaches
Kilimanjaro’s summit from the west and crosses the caldera of
Shira Volcano before heading beneath the southern ice fields of
Kibo. The route is seldom used by other trekkers and so your
initial two days on the mountain are less crowded than on most
other routes.

- Oldonyo LeNgai "Mountain of God" in Tanzania
Mount Kenya Climbing At 5,199 m, Mount Kenya is the second
highest peak in Africa. It is an ancient extinct volcano, during
whose period of activity (3.1–2.6 million years ago) it is
thought to have risen to 6,500 m. There are 12 remnant glaciers
on the mountain, all receding rapidly, and four secondary peaks
that sit at the head of the U-shaped glacial valleys. With its
rugged glacier-clad summits and forested middle slopes, Mount
Kenya is one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa.
The evolution and ecology of its afro-alpine flora also provide
an outstanding example of ecological processes. There are three
main routes, which penetrate the forest and the moorland. The
routes are Naromoru, Sirimon and Chogoria and each of which has
something different to offer. Naromoru is the fastest route to
point Lenana but not as scenic as the other two. Mt. Kenya's
Nelion Summit, Batian Summit and Point Lenana
-
Mount Kenya
Climbing Routes
-
Sirimon down Sirimon A more gradual trek to the
summit, traversing areas of rich forest cover before
emerging into the sprawling moorlands. This hike is
usually rated as the easiest among the short trips and
is quite popular with persons attempting to reach an
altitude exceeding 4000m for the first time. It is a
good choice for large trekking groups as it follows the
same trail up and down, making it convenient for those
who are unable to reach the summit to stay behind at
lower camps to wait for the rest of the group to
complete the trip then descend together. Unless
preferred, camping is not necessary as accommodation is
available in a lodge and mountain huts throughout the
trip.
Mt Kenya Climb Sirimon down Chogoria On this Mount Kenya
climbing experience, you ascend via the dry and little used
Sirimon Trail and descend on the scenic Chogoria Trail. You
reach point Lenana (4985 m), the highest point accessible to
walkers, and return to base. Mount Kenya is Africa's second
highest mountain. Above the habitable altitude, you find a
rainforest zone, abundant with many tree species and wildlife
too. Further up is open moorland, and beyond is the snow line
where vegetation is sparse. Finding snow on the equator was a
great surprise for the first Europeans to get to East Africa.
Sirimon down Narumoru The Naro Moru route is the fastest
and therefore also the most popular route onto the mountain,
being used by many of the tour and outfitting companies guiding
clients up to Point Lenana.
Mount Meru Climbing Mount Meru is one of Africa's most
beautiful volcanoes, and it is the second highest mountain in
Tanzania at 4,5685m, the third highest in Africa.
The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s
gem. This prime location gives walkers the opportunity to spot
some of the birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. The ascend
is quite steep, the route to the summit passes over streams,
through parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone and
moorland. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which
provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand
feet below in the crater. Weather permitting, Kilimanjaro can be
seen in the West. There are two huts available to climbers on
the mountain and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb
Meru is between October and February. But also June to
September, while it is colder then.
