Tanzania
Safari – Driving Safari in the North
At Tanzania Odyssey we specialise in arranging personalised Land
Rover safaris through all of the regions of Northern Tanzania,
in which you experience these stunning landscapes up close and
personal, in the comfort of a private vehicle, with your own
highly experienced and informative driver-guide. We strongly
recommend that you take a private driving safari in the north,
even if there are just two of you.
Mobile Driving Safaris A standard mobile driving safari will
include all the parks above in a circuit, which allows you to
experience a range of landscapes and accommodation options,
including some tented and some lodge nights. Most safaris and
mountain-climbing expeditions in Northern Tanzania begin and end
in Arusha, where many people chose to spend at least one night
in the gloriously fertile hillsides around the town before
taking to the road.
Walking in the North With few exceptions, no walking is allowed
in the northern parks and game viewing is by closed-sided
vehicle. There are possibilities to walk in certain concession
areas, such as around Klein’s Camp, outside the National Park
boundaries and in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Crater
Highlands.
Tanzania Safari - Flying Safari in the North
If an extended driving safari is not going to work for you, then
you may consider a Conservation Corporation flying circuit,
visiting the CCA luxury lodges in this northern region; Klein's,
Grumeti, Maji Moto, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. The minimum
recommended time for this is 5 nights, although 6 to 8 are
strongly recommended, spending the majority of time spent in the
Serengeti.
Tanzania Safari - Flying for the Best of the Best
There is also the option to fly to distant reaches for
superlative safaris off the beaten track. Certain fantastic and
distant camps are well worth flying to, notably Sayari, a
permanent tented camp in the idyllically unspoilt region of the
Lamai Wedge in Northern Serengeti. Otherwise, if you would like
to track the path of the migration on a luxury mobile tented
safari, it is often necessary to fly to a localised start point
.
Tanzania Safari - An Idea of Price in the North
For a Northern circuit safari the differences of the safari
experience are directly related to the cost and to the high
standard of service provided. As an idea, a private Land Rover
safari staying in the Serena lodges will cost around $500 per
per person night, slightly more than a group minibus itinerary,
however infinitely preferable!
A Conservation Corporation flying safari will cost around $800
per person per night, staying in the very fine range of
Conservation Corporation accommodation, which is mainly classic
permanent tented camps, although Conservation Corporation are
now also running a fine mobile tented camp in the Serengeti.
Private mobile tented safaris are likely to cost more.
Tanzania Safari: Where to Stay in the North
There are 3 major chains of hotels represented in the northern
parks, the best are the Conservation Corporation lodges, then
the Serena hotels and then the Sopa lodges, which are good but
much older and lacking the style and panache of the other two.
Luxury tented camping is about the same price as the luxury
Serena hotel, due to the level of personal service and
organisation required.
We customise your Kenya / Tanzania Safari Travel - We can tailor
your holiday to suit your needs or your budget .
We also offer Active tours such as Kenya Safari Walking
holidays, cultural and mountain climbing in Kenya and Tanzania,
as well as Honeymoons and Family vacations. Tanzania Safaris &

Serengeti National Park
-
The
Serengeti is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in
the world, and the commitment to its preservation shown
by the government of Tanzania is important in a country
faced by land shortage and a rising population.
-
-
Lake
Manyara National Park
The lake is renowned among ornithologists for its birds
of prey and the famous tree-climbing lions that inhabit
the woodland that nestles between the lake and the Rift
Valley.
-
-
Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest perfect caldera in
the world. This outstanding wonder is only one of the
attractions within a vast and diverse conservation area
Tarangire National Park
The park derives its name from the Tarangire River which
rises in Tanzania's central highland and snakes its way
through the length of this sanctuary.
Selous Game Reserve
The vast majority of Tanzania's elephant herd live in
one remote stretch of safari wilderness-the Selous Game
Reserve. Stigler's Gorge is one of the park's most
striking features.
Ruaha
crocodiles bask, hippos wallow and clawless otters zip
to and fro. Grazers came down through the acacia to
drink under the gaze of lion, leopard, spotted hyena,
jackal and hunting dog. Eurasian migrant birds flock
here twice a year and join the resident water birds-
everything from kingfishers to egrets.
Mt. Kilimanjaro
The mountain owes its existence to the formation of the
Great Rift Valley and is actually three volcanic cones
that, due to their proximity, became one - Shira,
Mawenzi and Kibo- together they make the highest free
standing mountain in the world. It is possible to climb
this 'wedding cake' mountain all year round although the
best times are the dry months of January, February and
July through to September.
Mikumi
The main feature here is the open grasslands of the
Mikumi flood lain which is bordered on two sides by
mountain ranges. On the southern end one can spot the
yellow baboon, impalas, reedbucks and other antelope.
Some distance to the north are the Hippo Pools dominated
by hippo, as well as a variety of waterbirds
-
-
Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo was the major slave trading post in East
Africa. Bagamoyo, which means ‘lay down your heart’ in
Swahili, was probably given this name because Bagamoyo
was the last place the slaves would stay in Tanzania
before being shipped off to foreign lands.
Arusha National Park Tanzania
Once quoted as being 'a gem among park's this is the
closest to Arusha. Visit it and experience the real
Tanzania Safari Adventure. The floor is covered by lush
swamps and riverine forest and is home to rhino,
elephant , buffalo, baboon, warthog, olive baboon and
the black and white colobus monkey.

The Best of Kenya Tanzania and Zanzibar
A Spectacular, 15 -Day Private journey to appreciate the natural
beauty of some of the greatest, most pristine wilderness areas
in Africa.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY
B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner
Day 1: Nairobi - Kenya
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, transfer to the city
hotel, conveniently located near the city centre. All transfers
in Africa are on private basis.
NAIROBI SERENA HOTEL
Day 2 : Amboseli National Park - Private
Vehicle - Private Chauffeur
After breakfast drive to Amboseli National Park. Close to the
Tanzanian border, Amboseli lies in the shadow of Mt.
Kilimanjaro. Surely this is the most photogenic backdrop to any
wildlife sanctuary in Africa. Your game runs will introduce you
to large numbers of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala and
gazelle - with the resident lions and cheetahs never far behind.
AMBOSELI SERENA LODGE (B,L,D)
Day 3 : Amboseli National Park - Private
Vehicle - Private Chauffeur
Early morning and late afternoon game drives. You may find the
park's elephant herds cooling off in the swamp waters and, with
luck, the black rhino might be sighted in the bushland. The bird
life of Amboseli is rich and varied - over 420 species - 47 of
them raptors. Multitudes of water birds can be seen. The Taveta
golden weaver is abundant. Ostrich and bustard are seen on the
plains, the buffalo and rhino host the oxpecker, while the
elephants transport egrets. The lovely crowned crane is common
and the sand grouse make quite a spectacle as they arrive at the
water place en masse. In the evening, a visual
feast...Kilimanjaro at sunset.
AMBOSELI SERENA LODGE (B,L,D)
Day 4 : Ngorongoro, Tanzania - Private
Vehicle - Private Chauffeur
We’ll breakfast with a glorious sunrise and possibly a glimpse
of Mt. Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak, and then depart for the
Kenya/Tanzania border at Namanga and cross over into Tanzania.
We drive to Arusha and after lunch we depart to Arusha, where we
stop for lunch, before continuing to the Ngorongoro Crater,
famed for its sheer physical beauty and abundance of wildlife,
numbering over 30,000. Our accommodation is on the rim of the
Crater. NGORONGORO SERENA or SOPA LODGE (B,L,D)
Day 5 : Ngorongoro Crater - Private
Vehicle - Private Chauffeur
After breakfast, we’ll descend 2,000 feet along a rocky track
into the crater. It's an idyllic day, replete with picnic lunch.
There is good game viewing here all year round. Africa’s highest
concentration of lions may be viewed in the crater at
astonishingly close range amid breathtaking landscapes. The
rhinoceros population is easy to spot. We’ll also have a chance
to view buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, reedbuck, hippos and
elephants.
NGORONGORO SERENA OR SOPA LODGE (B,L,D)
Day 6 : Olduvai Gorge / Serengeti National Park
Today we enter the Stone Age and witness the origin of mankind
at Olduvai Gorge. Under the direction of Louis and Mary Leakey,
this area has yielded abundant fossil material dating back over
two million years. Then we continue to the Serengeti Plains.
Africa’s most famous park is unequaled in its primitive natural
beauty and fantastic abundance of plains game. Throughout the
ages naturalists and writers have singled out this very special
sanctuary in their paeans of praise. And with good reason! Here,
since time immemorial, the world's most astonishing annual
migration takes place. Herds of plains game numbering more than
a million stretch to the horizon in long slender lines.
Naturally some hosts of predators follow along. No words can
adequately describe this stronghold of wildlife.
SERENGETI SERENA OR SOPA LODGE (B,L,D)
Day 7 & Day 8 : Serengeti National Park - Private
Vehicl - Private
Chauffeur
During our game drives we're sure to sight a variety of plains’
game, ostrich, and giraffe. Hyenas and jackals wait patiently
near feasting predators. Elephants trundle through the woodland
and the cheetah is sighted more often than not. The Serengeti
has some of the world’s best bird-watching, with more than 500
species identified. During his famous study of the Serengeti
lion, George Schaller counted no less than 3,000. We'll travel
the leopard circuit. The chances of sighting this animal are
greater here than anywhere else in Africa.
SERENGETI SERENA OR SOPA LODGE (B,L,D) daily
Day 9: Arusha / Zanzibar
This morning we transfer to the airport for our flight to
Zanzibar, air fare is included of course in our rate, Zanzibar
lies just off the coast of Tanzania. Upon arrival we'll be met
by our local representative and transferred to our hotel, the
Zanzibar Serena. Located on the seafront of Zanzibar's historic
Stone Town, this latest addition to the Serena collection of
hotels.
Zanzibar is a paradise that nestles in the sun about 25 miles
off the coast of Tanzania. It's very name evokes a romantic
past. The different races that have settled in Zanzibar over the
centuries; Summarians, Assyrians, Hindus, Egyptians,
Phoenicians, Southern Arabians, Chinese and Malays, have left
their impact on the people and the architecture.
The "House of Wonders" (once the Palace of the former Sultan)
and the narrow streets of the old town are just some of the
vivid reminders of the island's long and colored history. A
guest walking in Zanzibar, smelling the scent of cloves in the
air, recalls that he is on "The Island of Spices" where nutmeg
and cinnamon are also grown. Beautiful white beaches hug the
shoreline and the various first class accommodations entice
guests to indulge in water sporting and marine activities
present.
SERENA BEACH HOTEL (B,D)
Day 10, 11, & Day 13 : Zanzibar
The Zanzibar Serena Inn has been created by renovating and
rehabilitating two of the romantic and historic buildings in the
heart of Zanzibar's classified Stone Town. It provides fifty-two
ocean facing, air-conditioned rooms, each with its own private
balcony and bathroom, a seafront restaurant and bar and a
spacious and secluded swimming pool. The Zanzibar Serena Inn
constitutes, for the discerning traveller, an ideal base for
exploring the natural and historic wonders of this famous spice
Island. The hotel can provide a full local excursion service for
optional Stone Town tours, Island tours, diving and snorkeling
trips and day-boat excursions to Zanzibar's nearby famous
beaches and islands. These excursions are to be booked and paid
for directly . Days at leisure for activities in and around the
hotel.
ZANZIBAR SERENA INN (B,D - daily)

we connect with our onward flight. Air fare Zanzibar Nairobi is
of course included in our rate.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Climbing Routes
Marangu Route 8 Days Affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola
route", Marangu is by far the most popular route to the summit
of Kilimanjaro. This could partly be as a result of the fact
that the Marangu is the least expensive route, but more so,
perhaps the fact that it is possible to do the Marangu route in
6 days, thereby getting to the summit one day earlier than on
the Machame route.
Machame Route Sometimes called the Whisky Route. This is a
popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain
a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau.
It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the
Southern Icefields to join the Barafu Route to the summit.
Umbwe Route
The Umbwe route is one of the
shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach.
It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on
Kilimanjaro. It is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively
fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful.
Lemosho Route
This is the longest and most remote
route to Kilimanjaro. After beautiful forests and moorlands it
crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route.
Groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as
the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo,
elephant and other game.
Rongai Route
This remote and less frequently used route is the second easiest
route to Kilimanjaro. The approach to the mountain is from the
less-forested north side and the descent is by the Marangu
Route. There are several variations, the one described below is
a longer route taking in Mawenzi Tarn.
Shira Route
The Shira route, approaches
Kilimanjaro’s summit from the west and crosses the caldera of
Shira Volcano before heading beneath the southern ice fields of
Kibo. The route is seldom used by other trekkers and so your
initial two days on the mountain are less crowded than on most
other routes.

- Oldonyo LeNgai "Mountain of God" in Tanzania
Mount Kenya Climbing At 5,199 m, Mount Kenya is the second
highest peak in Africa. It is an ancient extinct volcano, during
whose period of activity (3.1–2.6 million years ago) it is
thought to have risen to 6,500 m. There are 12 remnant glaciers
on the mountain, all receding rapidly, and four secondary peaks
that sit at the head of the U-shaped glacial valleys. With its
rugged glacier-clad summits and forested middle slopes, Mount
Kenya is one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa.
The evolution and ecology of its afro-alpine flora also provide
an outstanding example of ecological processes. There are three
main routes, which penetrate the forest and the moorland. The
routes are Naromoru, Sirimon and Chogoria and each of which has
something different to offer. Naromoru is the fastest route to
point Lenana but not as scenic as the other two. Mt. Kenya's
Nelion Summit, Batian Summit and Point Lenana
-
Mount Kenya
Climbing Routes
-
Sirimon down Sirimon A more gradual trek to the
summit, traversing areas of rich forest cover before
emerging into the sprawling moorlands. This hike is
usually rated as the easiest among the short trips and
is quite popular with persons attempting to reach an
altitude exceeding 4000m for the first time. It is a
good choice for large trekking groups as it follows the
same trail up and down, making it convenient for those
who are unable to reach the summit to stay behind at
lower camps to wait for the rest of the group to
complete the trip then descend together. Unless
preferred, camping is not necessary as accommodation is
available in a lodge and mountain huts throughout the
trip.
Mt Kenya Climb Sirimon down Chogoria On this Mount Kenya
climbing experience, you ascend via the dry and little used
Sirimon Trail and descend on the scenic Chogoria Trail. You
reach point Lenana (4985 m), the highest point accessible to
walkers, and return to base. Mount Kenya is Africa's second
highest mountain. Above the habitable altitude, you find a
rainforest zone, abundant with many tree species and wildlife
too. Further up is open moorland, and beyond is the snow line
where vegetation is sparse. Finding snow on the equator was a
great surprise for the first Europeans to get to East Africa.
Sirimon down Narumoru The Naro Moru route is the fastest
and therefore also the most popular route onto the mountain,
being used by many of the tour and outfitting companies guiding
clients up to Point Lenana.
Mount Meru Climbing Mount Meru is one of Africa's most
beautiful volcanoes, and it is the second highest mountain in
Tanzania at 4,5685m, the third highest in Africa.
The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s
gem. This prime location gives walkers the opportunity to spot
some of the birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. The ascend
is quite steep, the route to the summit passes over streams,
through parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone and
moorland. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which
provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand
feet below in the crater. Weather permitting, Kilimanjaro can be
seen in the West. There are two huts available to climbers on
the mountain and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb
Meru is between October and February. But also June to
September, while it is colder then.
