A 6 day safari which starts and finishes in Kigali. This safari can also be done on a private basis. [gorilla permit is included in the cost but the other gorilla tracking require a supplement to be paid at time of booking.]

Seeing some of the last remaining 700 mountain gorillas in the world is a fantastic experience and this safari takes you to two gorilla parks – PNV in Rwanda and Mgahinga in Uganda. It offers an opportunity to track gorillas three times, twice in PNV, once in Mgahinga/Nkuringo. PNV in Rwanda has five habituated gorilla families and tracking most groups in the afro-montane forest usually takes only a few hours. You can also climb a volcano, visit the remains of Dian Fossey’s grave and the endangered golden monkey. Mgahinga, in Uganda, is a great place to appreciate the unique Virunga volcanoes and it has one habituated family. Sometimes this group moves across the border so you can track gorillas at Nkuringo in Southern Bwindi instead. You can also climb a volcano or go for a nature walk, visit the endangered golden monkey or go birding.

Prices include transport and a driver/guide for the itinerary agreed, accommodation on a shared basis and meals stated (in Kampala, Entebbe and Kigali bed and breakfast only and on safari full board) and, where appropriate, boat trips, park fees, chimpanzee permits and one gorilla permit. At Volcanoes gorilla lodges (Bwindi, Mount Gahinga and Virunga), the tariffs are on an all-inclusive basis and, in addition to accommodation and meals, include unlimited consumption of all alcoholic and soft drinks; laundry services; and any activities clients wish to do around the lodges. A complimentary massage is also offered.

Prices exclude airfares to Uganda/Rwanda, entry visas and airport taxes. At non-Volcanoes lodges all personal expenditure such as laundry and drinks are excluded.

All gorilla permits need to be purchased at the time of booking or a deposit equivalent to 20% of the cost of the safari paid, whichever is higher. Gorilla viewing is subject to availability of permits, which are limited; any additional gorilla permits required should be purchased when booking. Gorilla permit prices are subject to change without warning.

Note:: Only a limited number of gorilla permits are issued per day and as such, book up very quickly. We advise that clients give us 3 months advance notice if they wish to do a Gorilla tour.

Gorilla tracking or trekking is the top safari activity of tourists who flock to Uganda.

The first written reference to Mt. Kilimanjaro was by Ptolemy but even so, Africa's highest mountain and the highest free standing mountain in the world remained relatively unknown to the outside world until 1848. Snow capped and shrouded by clouds, the local Chagga people called it 'Kilema Kyaro' meaning 'that which cannot be conquered' or 'that which makes a journey impossible.' Today, it is the dream of every adventurer to conquer its summit and stand on the "roof of Africa."

Rwanda Gorilla Trek Safari

# Gorilla tracking
# Parcs de Volcans
# Witness a gorilla family
# Learn about the region's history

Rwanda's Parcs de Volcans is considerably more dramatic and infinitely more beautiful than the slivers of rain forest available for gorilla tracking in Uganda. There are also many more gorillas here, and the research has continued continuously for a much longer period. The return to true mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda marks a turning point for the country, and a welcome reopening for adventure touring. Experience these amazing creatures up close!

Day 1: Kigali, Rwanda

On arrival, you'll be met and taken to the Intercontinental Hotel. For those arriving early, sightseeing is available, including a city tour and countryside trip to the Genocide Memorial.

Day 2: Parcs de Volcans, Rwanda

This morning you travel to the Parcs de Volcans. It becomes immediately clear why early settlers called this the Switzerland of Africa. Almost the entire country is 5 - 7 thousand feet high, and incredibly lush. Where there aren't huge indigenous forests, there are enormous tea plantations and other types of farming.

You will drive over good roads where you will arrive at your lodge, hotel or tented camp before noon. Lunch is served before an afternoon of varied activities. There are walks in the area, as well as visits that can be arranged to nearby villages, markets and research facilities, such as the Karisoke Veterinary Post. Then, dinner and overnight at your choice of accommodations.
Accommodation choices:

Gorilla's Nest Lodge is a modest tourist-class facility with simple rooms and a modest restaurant. The lodge is located in a forest near the little village of Kinigi. It is the nearest to the national park, resulting in less than a 20 minute drive to the area where the trekking begins.

The Kivu Sun Hotel is a lovely, first-class resort hotel spectacularly located on the shores of Lake Kivu with striking views of the distant volcanoes. The hotel is located in the bustling town of Gisenyi on the border with the Congo. The drive to the national park is around 80 - 90 minutes over good roads.

Virunga Lodge is an exclusive, luxury 'Bush Home' located on a spectacular hill overlooking the Virguna Mountains, providing outstanding comforts in a breath-taking setting. The drive to the national park is just over an hour.

Day 3 Gorilla trekking - Kigali, Rwanda
There are currently 30 permits issued daily for 5 different Gorilla families on 3 of the park's 7 volcanoes. At the forest's edge each morning around 7am, park rangers assemble these 30 enthusiastic travellers and instructs them regarding .

There are 3 classifications of Gorilla. That is the Western Lowland Gorilla, the Eastern Lowland and the Mountain Gorilla or Gorilla Berengei Berengei. All these gorillas are endangered due to poaching, habitat destruction and trade in bush meat.

Gorillas move in groups led by the male gorilla, the Silverback. Silver back is about 12 years of age or more with silver hair on his back. Its resposible for the entire movement of the troop, decision making and safety.

The two homes of mountain gorillas are Bwindi National park and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda.
In Rwanda, Gorilla tracking is done in Parc de Volcans.

The Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi largely feed on fruits, foliage and epiphytes. the Bwindi gorilla diet is almost the same as that of the Bwindi Chimpanzees.

Gorilla tracking or trekking is the top safari activity of tourists who flock to Uganda. A permit can be obtained and arranged by African Pearl Safaris.
