Serengeti National Park
-
The
Serengeti is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in
the world, and the commitment to its preservation shown
by the government of Tanzania is important in a country
faced by land shortage and a rising population.
-
-
Lake
Manyara National Park
The lake is renowned among ornithologists for its birds
of prey and the famous tree-climbing lions that inhabit
the woodland that nestles between the lake and the Rift
Valley.
-
-
Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest perfect caldera in
the world. This outstanding wonder is only one of the
attractions within a vast and diverse conservation area
Tarangire National Park
The park derives its name from the Tarangire River which
rises in Tanzania's central highland and snakes its way
through the length of this sanctuary.
Selous Game Reserve
The vast majority of Tanzania's elephant herd live in
one remote stretch of safari wilderness-the Selous Game
Reserve. Stigler's Gorge is one of the park's most
striking features.
Ruaha
crocodiles bask, hippos wallow and clawless otters zip
to and fro. Grazers came down through the acacia to
drink under the gaze of lion, leopard, spotted hyena,
jackal and hunting dog. Eurasian migrant birds flock
here twice a year and join the resident water birds-
everything from kingfishers to egrets.
Mt. Kilimanjaro
The mountain owes its existence to the formation of the
Great Rift Valley and is actually three volcanic cones
that, due to their proximity, became one - Shira,
Mawenzi and Kibo- together they make the highest free
standing mountain in the world. It is possible to climb
this 'wedding cake' mountain all year round although the
best times are the dry months of January, February and
July through to September.
Mikumi
The main feature here is the open grasslands of the
Mikumi flood lain which is bordered on two sides by
mountain ranges. On the southern end one can spot the
yellow baboon, impalas, reedbucks and other antelope.
Some distance to the north are the Hippo Pools dominated
by hippo, as well as a variety of waterbirds
-
-
Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo was the major slave trading post in East
Africa. Bagamoyo, which means ‘lay down your heart’ in
Swahili, was probably given this name because Bagamoyo
was the last place the slaves would stay in Tanzania
before being shipped off to foreign lands.
Arusha National Park Tanzania
Once quoted as being 'a gem among park's this is the
closest to Arusha. Visit it and experience the real
Tanzania Safari Adventure. The floor is covered by lush
swamps and riverine forest and is home to rhino,
elephant , buffalo, baboon, warthog, olive baboon and
the black and white colobus monkey.

12 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb and Rwanda
Gorilla Treks
Kilimanjaro Climbing Marangu Route Trekking
Total hiking distance: About 96 km's
(Excluding any acclimatisation hike)
Affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola route", Marangu is by far
the most popular route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. This could
partly be as a result of the fact that the Marangu is the least
expensive route, but more so, perhaps the fact that it is
possible to do the Marangu route in 5 days, thereby getting to
the summit one day earlier than on the Machame route. This is
not always the best way due to a shorter acclimatisation period.
The Marangu route does however offer you the option of spending
an extra acclimatisation day on the mountain. This extends the
route to a 6-day march, greatly increasing your chances of
success. Hut accommodation on the Marangu route forms one of the
main differences, compared to the other routes. It offers you
the relative luxury of being able to sleep in huts along the
entire route. Mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and beers
are also sold at all the camps on this route. All your equipment
and supplies are portered and a cook prepares all your meals.
For the 5-day route, simply exclude the additional
acclimatisation day at Horombo hut - day 3 on the itinerary
below.
Day 1: Arrival - Moshi
On arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, met and assisted. Transfer to
a Hotel in Moshi for an overnight rest on bed and breakfast in
readiness for the next day's hit to Kilimanjaro.
Day 2: Marangu Gate (1980m) - Mandara hut (2700m)
Hiking time: 5 hours | Distance: About 12 km's | Habitat:
Montane forest
The drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate. The journey
passes through the village of Marangu, which is located on the
lower slopes of the mountain. Once you reach the park gate, all
hikers are requested to sign in at the Park office and make
their final preparations for the climb. Porters will be seen
arranging and loading their packs, containing the food, water,
cooking gas as well as most of your equipment. Make sure that
you have all your daypack items (containing at least drinking
water, your lunch pack and extra clothing) with you as the
porters ascend a lot quicker than the hikers. Our guides will be
available to assist with any additional information or needs you
might have. You now leave the Park gate and ascend on a cleared
ridge trail through the rain forest. The forest, suffused with
mist and dripping with beards of moss, is also where most of
Kilimanjaro's animals are found. (An alternative and more scenic
parallel forest trail, branches off to the left a few minutes
after the gate. This trail follows the edge of a stream through
the undergrowth and offers you the option to rejoin the main
trail either, after 1½ hours hiking, or 1 hour before Mandara
hut.)
Your first night stop, Mandara hut, is a group of wooden
A-framed huts in a forest clearing. Each hut features 6-8
sleeping bunks with solar generated lighting. The total capacity
of the camp is 60 climbers. Water is piped into the camp from
springs above and there are flush toilets behind the main hut,
B,L,D.
Day 3: Mandara hut (2700m) - Horombo hut (3720m)
Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 15 km's | Habitat:
Moorland
From Mandara hut the trail passes through a short stretch of
forest, then skirts the base of the Maundi Crater and then
emerges into the transition from rain forest to moorland. It is
well worth a short detour to scramble up the rim of the Maundi
Crater for your first really impressive view of the Kibo Crater.
On a clear day, Kibo will glimmer in the distance, showing off
her majestic glaciers in the morning sun. Once you are in the
open moorland you will get the chance to see some of
Kilimanjaro's most spectacular plants - the endemic giant
lobelia which grows up to 3 m in height and the giant groundsel
(Senecia Kilimanjari), which can reach heights of 5m! After
about 6 hours from here you reach the Horombo hut, where you
will have hot washing water, rest; an evening meal and
overnight.
Day 4: Horombo hut (3720m) - Acclimatisation day
Horombo hut is a village of huts perched on a small plateau,
with buildings similar to Mandara, but with a total capacity of
120 climbers! Normally bustling with hikers, guides, porters and
with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet
both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and
night at Horombo is for additional acclimatisation. A hike
towards the Mawenzi hut, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way
(about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down), is strongly recommended.
This hike will further assist with the process of
acclimatisation. Remember to drink enough water and move slowly!
All meals for the day are provided at the hut. Retire to bed
early and get a last good night's rest, B,L,D.
Day 5: Horombo hut (3720m) - Kibo hut (4700m)
Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 15 km's | Habitat: Alpine
desert
After breakfast you now continue your ascent into the Alpine
desert habitat. From Horombo there are two trails to the
"Saddle" (which refers to the area located between the peaks of
Mawenzi and Kibo). There is an upper route (right hand fork) and
lower route (left hand fork) to choose from. The upper route
(right hand fork) will be very familiar, as you will have
climbed most of it the previous day towards Mawenzi hut. It is
very stony and eroded.
The recommended lower route (left hand fork) is much easier and
nearly an hour and it also passes the last watering point at
4130m. You will have to fill your water bottles with all the
water you will need until your return to Horombo hut in two
night's time (unless you are willing to buy Mineral water at
Kibo hut). Once again remember to slow down and drink enough
water!! Situated in the barren Alpine desert is Horombo hut, a
stone build block house which has bunk beds for 60 climbers, but
no streams with water nearby. It is however possible to buy
mineral water and soft drinks at the camp office.
There are platform toilets behind the hut. The summit is now a
further 1195m up and you will make your final ascent the same
night. Prepare your equipment, ski-stick and thermal clothing
for your summit bid. This should include the replacement of your
headlamp and camera batteries and make sure you have a spare set
available as well. To prevent freezing it will be wise to carry
your water in a thermal flask. Go to bed at round about 19h00
and try to get as much rest and sleep as possible, B,L,D.
Day 6: SUMMIT ATTEMPT, Kibo hut (4700m) - Uhuru Peak (5895m) -
Horombo hut (3720m)
Hiking time: 8 hours to Uhuru - 6 hours to descend to Horombo |
Distance: 6 km's ascent - 21 km's descent | Habitat: Stone scree
and ice-capped summit
You will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits you
shuffle off into the night, and this is where the going really
gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky
path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot.
The path then zigzags up to Gillman's point (5 681m), which is
located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot
of stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort.
Probably the most demanding section of the entire route. Do the
Kili shuffle and move slowly.
From Gillman’s Point you will normally encounter snow all the
way up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Total
exhilaration and satisfaction - you made it. Weather conditions
on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend,
taking photographs, before the 3 hour descent back to Kibo hut.
After a short rest you gather all your gear you left behind for
the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for your
overnight. The return to Horombo hut will seem surprisingly fast
compared to the ascent. The total time spent walking on this day
is around 14 hours, so be prepared for a very tough day.
Later in the evening you enjoy your last dinner (with soft
drinks and beer for sale at the camp office) on the mountain and
a well-earned sleep, filled with memories and stirring emotions,
B,L,D.
Day 7: Horombo hut (3720m) - Marangu Gate (1980m)
Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 27 km's
After breakfast you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the
Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. At Marangu gate you sign
your name and details in a register. This is also where
successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those
climbers who reached Gillman's Point (5685m) are issued with
green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m),
receive gold certificates. You now drive back to Moshi for a
long over due hot shower, dinner and celebrations!! Overnight at
a Hotel, B,L.
Day 8: Kilimanjro - Rwanda
Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight to Rwanda.
Day 9: Upon arrival at Kanombe Airport, you are met and
driven to your hotel. This 2Hrs drive takes you through the
beautifully terraced hilly countryside of Rwanda to Ruhengeri
the base of gorilla trekking. O/ night Gorilla Nest FB

Mount Kilimanjaro
Climbing Routes
Marangu Route 8 Days Affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola
route", Marangu is by far the most popular route to the summit
of Kilimanjaro. This could partly be as a result of the fact
that the Marangu is the least expensive route, but more so,
perhaps the fact that it is possible to do the Marangu route in
6 days, thereby getting to the summit one day earlier than on
the Machame route.
Machame Route Sometimes called the Whisky Route. This is a
popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain
a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau.
It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the
Southern Icefields to join the Barafu Route to the summit.
Umbwe Route
The Umbwe route is one of the
shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach.
It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on
Kilimanjaro. It is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively
fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful.
Lemosho Route
This is the longest and most remote
route to Kilimanjaro. After beautiful forests and moorlands it
crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route.
Groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as
the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo,
elephant and other game.
Rongai Route
This remote and less frequently used route is the second easiest
route to Kilimanjaro. The approach to the mountain is from the
less-forested north side and the descent is by the Marangu
Route. There are several variations, the one described below is
a longer route taking in Mawenzi Tarn.
Shira Route
The Shira route, approaches
Kilimanjaro’s summit from the west and crosses the caldera of
Shira Volcano before heading beneath the southern ice fields of
Kibo. The route is seldom used by other trekkers and so your
initial two days on the mountain are less crowded than on most
other routes.

- Oldonyo LeNgai "Mountain of God" in Tanzania
Mount Kenya Climbing At 5,199 m, Mount Kenya is the second
highest peak in Africa. It is an ancient extinct volcano, during
whose period of activity (3.1–2.6 million years ago) it is
thought to have risen to 6,500 m. There are 12 remnant glaciers
on the mountain, all receding rapidly, and four secondary peaks
that sit at the head of the U-shaped glacial valleys. With its
rugged glacier-clad summits and forested middle slopes, Mount
Kenya is one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa.
The evolution and ecology of its afro-alpine flora also provide
an outstanding example of ecological processes. There are three
main routes, which penetrate the forest and the moorland. The
routes are Naromoru, Sirimon and Chogoria and each of which has
something different to offer. Naromoru is the fastest route to
point Lenana but not as scenic as the other two. Mt. Kenya's
Nelion Summit, Batian Summit and Point Lenana
-
Mount Kenya
Climbing Routes
-
Sirimon down Sirimon A more gradual trek to the
summit, traversing areas of rich forest cover before
emerging into the sprawling moorlands. This hike is
usually rated as the easiest among the short trips and
is quite popular with persons attempting to reach an
altitude exceeding 4000m for the first time. It is a
good choice for large trekking groups as it follows the
same trail up and down, making it convenient for those
who are unable to reach the summit to stay behind at
lower camps to wait for the rest of the group to
complete the trip then descend together. Unless
preferred, camping is not necessary as accommodation is
available in a lodge and mountain huts throughout the
trip.
Mt Kenya Climb Sirimon down Chogoria On this Mount Kenya
climbing experience, you ascend via the dry and little used
Sirimon Trail and descend on the scenic Chogoria Trail. You
reach point Lenana (4985 m), the highest point accessible to
walkers, and return to base. Mount Kenya is Africa's second
highest mountain. Above the habitable altitude, you find a
rainforest zone, abundant with many tree species and wildlife
too. Further up is open moorland, and beyond is the snow line
where vegetation is sparse. Finding snow on the equator was a
great surprise for the first Europeans to get to East Africa.
Sirimon down Narumoru The Naro Moru route is the fastest
and therefore also the most popular route onto the mountain,
being used by many of the tour and outfitting companies guiding
clients up to Point Lenana.
Mount Meru Climbing Mount Meru is one of Africa's most
beautiful volcanoes, and it is the second highest mountain in
Tanzania at 4,5685m, the third highest in Africa.
The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s
gem. This prime location gives walkers the opportunity to spot
some of the birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. The ascend
is quite steep, the route to the summit passes over streams,
through parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone and
moorland. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which
provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand
feet below in the crater. Weather permitting, Kilimanjaro can be
seen in the West. There are two huts available to climbers on
the mountain and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb
Meru is between October and February. But also June to
September, while it is colder then.

Mountain Gorilla Safari
Testimony of Bruce William 2006
Visiting mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is one of
the things a person must do in their lifetime. It is a unique
experience. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to 320 of
the 700 remaining mountain gorillas in the world. Three family
groups are habituated to humans and eight visitors are permitted
to spend an hour observing each family each day. Permits must be
purchased in advance at the UWA office in Kampala. The tour
companies take most of the permits as they become available, so
the independent traveller has to act fast and appear in person
with $500 US per person. Bills must be dated 2002 or later and
older US bills will be rejected.Gorilla Safari to Rwanda We
stayed at Buhoma Community Rest Camp, a community operated
facility with a few bandas and campsites. It is good to see the
money going to the local people instead of an upscale commercial
operation. Facilities are rudimentary, but well maintained and
clean.
Checking in for your gorilla trek is time consuming, so show up
early. First you have to go to the booth at the entrance to the
park, where a ranger will want to see your permit and passport,
will ask whether you have any communicable diseases and will
check your name off on a list. You are then directed to the park
ranger compound where a more senior ranger will want to see your
permit and passport, ask about communicable diseases and check
your name off on another master list. Finally there is an
orientation meeting where you are instructed about behaviour
near gorillas, the possibility of trekking through the jungle an
seeing no gorillas and the fact that if the guide determines you
have a communicable disease you will be sent home with no
gorilla sightings and no refund. You are given a chance to hire
a porter for 10,000 Uganda shilling (about $6.30 CAD). This is a
wise investment because carrying a pack with your camera, rain
jacket, lunch and water in a humid jungle is not pleasant and it
is good to provide income to the locals. Several of the ladies
in our group found that the porters could help them up steep
climbs and across streams in the jungle. One porter even carried
a lady who developed a sore knee for about half he distance.
These slight looking young porters are incredibly strong and
able to run up steep hills carrying a heavy load.
You have to drive from the assembly point to the start of your
trek. The other trekkers were with tour groups who had 4x4
vehicles, but we had a little 2 wheel drive Toyota Corolla and
were concerned we would not be able to keep up. The ranges
offered to let us ride in their 4x4 Land Rover pick-up. There is
a bench seat where my wife and daughter could sit beside the
driver and I got to sit in the back with the porters, rangers
and guides. I got a good close look at the AK47's the rangers
carry in the jungle. The young people in the back of the truck
had a good time as we drove to the start of our trek. I could
not understand much of the African language they were speaking,
but there seemed to be some good natured teasing of a cute
female porter involving the word Impenetrable from the park
name.
We finally arrived at the start of our trek. Gorillas move
through the jungle as they feed so it is not possible to tell in
advance how far the trek will be. One of the groups had to walk
35 minutes to see their gorillas and the other 45 minutes. Our
gorillas had moved during the night so it was a 3 1/2 hour hike
before we caught up with them. This started with about a
kilometer through some very steep farm land before we got to the
jungle, and then up and down jungle covered hills and across
several streams. As you move through the jungle, a guide stays
at the head of the group and porters are assigned to watch the
back for stragglers. Rangers armed with AK47 assault rifles move
ahead, to the flanks and to the rear of the group. These rangers
seem to do most of the work of locating the gorillas and finding
a good place to stop, remove packs and get cameras ready before
approaching.
We finally caught up with our gorilla family and spent an hour
observing and photographing them from close distances. This is
an unforgettable experience.
Gorilla Tours to Uganda
The guides decided it would be shorter to change the pick up
point and take a different route out of the jungle. They radioed
the trucks when they got out of the jungle to open farm land
where there was radio reception. |
