Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and the commitment to its preservation shown by the government of Tanzania is important in a country faced by land shortage and a rising population.

Lake Manyara National Park
The lake is renowned among ornithologists for its birds of prey and the famous tree-climbing lions that inhabit the woodland that nestles between the lake and the Rift Valley.

Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest perfect caldera in the world. This outstanding wonder is only one of the attractions within a vast and diverse conservation area

Tarangire National Park
The park derives its name from the Tarangire River which rises in Tanzania's central highland and snakes its way through the length of this sanctuary.

Selous Game Reserve
The vast majority of Tanzania's elephant herd live in one remote stretch of safari wilderness-the Selous Game Reserve. Stigler's Gorge is one of the park's most striking features.

Ruaha
crocodiles bask, hippos wallow and clawless otters zip to and fro. Grazers came down through the acacia to drink under the gaze of lion, leopard, spotted hyena, jackal and hunting dog. Eurasian migrant birds flock here twice a year and join the resident water birds- everything from kingfishers to egrets.

Mt. Kilimanjaro
The mountain owes its existence to the formation of the Great Rift Valley and is actually three volcanic cones that, due to their proximity, became one - Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo- together they make the highest free standing mountain in the world. It is possible to climb this 'wedding cake' mountain all year round although the best times are the dry months of January, February and July through to September.

Mikumi
The main feature here is the open grasslands of the Mikumi flood lain which is bordered on two sides by mountain ranges. On the southern end one can spot the yellow baboon, impalas, reedbucks and other antelope. Some distance to the north are the Hippo Pools dominated by hippo, as well as a variety of waterbirds

Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo was the major slave trading post in East Africa. Bagamoyo, which means ‘lay down your heart’ in Swahili, was probably given this name because Bagamoyo was the last place the slaves would stay in Tanzania before being shipped off to foreign lands.

Arusha National Park Tanzania
Once quoted as being 'a gem among park's this is the closest to Arusha. Visit it and experience the real Tanzania Safari Adventure. The floor is covered by lush swamps and riverine forest and is home to rhino, elephant , buffalo, baboon, warthog, olive baboon and the black and white colobus monkey.

An African Safari is about astonishing sunsets and meeting open-hearted people.
Come experience an African Classic Safari.

On our Africa Safari, Kenya Safari or Tanzania Safari packages your experience wild open vistas, abundant wildlife and pristine wilderness.
A typical African safari combines lodge stays with tented camping and visits to some of the most exciting game reserves on earth.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing FAQs
When is the best time to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro?
Even though one can climb throughout the year, January, February and September are the best months, with June, July, August, October and December also being good.

Does climbing the Kilimanjaro involve technicalities?
Not at all. Any person in good physical condition can climb and reach the summit. You should be able to run for half an hour or more without feeling short of breath. No one with a sore throat, cold or breathing problems should go above 3000 meters. People with heart or lung problems should not attempt the mountain at all without consulting their doctors. Being in the right mental state is important. Do not push yourself to go if your body is exhausted, or if you have extreme mountain sickness or more serious symptoms.

Park fees included?

Yes, both our Kilimanjaro and Safari prices include park fees and all other applicable fees and taxes.

Does an extra day help acclimatization?
Most guidebooks recommend that climbers spend an extra day during the Marangu route climb especially. This is much a personal decision, but our statistics do not indicate any greater success rate amongst 6 day Marangu route climbers over 5 day climbers. More important for success is the overall approach to the climb, right from the start. That said, many people like an extra day spent on the ascent because it makes the whole climb more relaxed and gives an opportunity to go on some pleasant walks.

If there is a problem on the mountain what are the rescue procedures?

The national park operates a rescue service, and the huts on the Marangu route are linked to each other and to the park headquarters by radio. In the vast majority of emergency cases, the problem is altitude related and the solution is immediate descent to a lower altitude. Our mountain crew are all experienced at dealing with such cases and can bring climbers down to safe altitudes very quickly and without park assistance if it is not immediately available.

Is it possible to rent mountain equipment from us?

We have a large stock of equipment. This is primarily for the free use of our fully equipped climbers but we also make equipment available for hire to climbers where necessary. Anyway, we encourage climbers to bring as much of their own warm clothing as possible. In particular, climbers should avoid having to hire or borrow boots.

Do your Tanzania trips include any transfer for those arriving in Nairobi, Kenya?

Yes, we include free bus shuttle transfer Nairobi-Arusha-Nairobi for those arriving/departing from Nairobi.
Please be advised that there are 2 daily bus shuttle transfers between Nairobi and Arusha, leaving from either place at 0800 and 1400, arriving to the other destination at 1230 and 1830 respectively. We can pick you up from either Nairobi airport or most hotels located in or near Nairobi City center. You need to be ready at least half an hour before the scheduled times.
Please be advised that the most convenient airport will be Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Can children climb Kilimanjaro?
The minimum age limit set by the National Park Authorities for trekking to Uhuru Peak is 12 years old.

What is the weather like on Mt. Kilimanjaro?

Equatorial to arctic conditions are present on the Kilimanjaro. The range begins with the warm, dry plains with average temperatures of 30c, ascends through a wide belt of wet tropical forest, through zones with generally decreasing temperatures and rainfall, to the summit where there is permanent ice and below freezing temperatures. The temperature at the top of the mountain get as Low as minus 25 degrees Celsius

How long does it take to reach the submit?
Climbing through the Marangu route, one can reach the summit in 5 or 6 days, including a day and a half of descending. On the Machame, Lemosho, and other routes it is normal for one to reach the summit in 6 or 7 days including a day and a half of descending

What kind of climbing gear do I need?
You need to have the following stuff for your climbing:
Boots, thermal underwear, warm clothes- top and pants, water/Windproof Pants and shell, socks (at least 6pairs- to be changed at least once on the way up), winter hat/balaclava (cover head and ears), water bottle, gators (for wind and mud), gloves (water/wind proof), neck warmer or scarf, sunglasses, flash lights, and batteries, walking stick, sleeping tent (for all other routes other than Marangu), sleeping bag and rain wear. Please be advised that we do provide sleeping tent and mattresses on our climbs.

Can we leave excess luggage behind whilst on trekking?

Yes, you can leave the stuff, which you do not need to carry with you up the mountain at the hotel, or in our office. Valuable items including cash should be specified.

How do I cope with change of altitude?

As you ascend the oxygen in the air decreases. Low oxygen in the blood causes shortness of breath during exertion, increased ventilation and heart-beats. You can acclimatize/adapt to the altitude by ascending slowly and pacing yourself, avoiding exertion and breathing regularly and deeply.

Are rescue facilities available?

Yes. Only Marangu route has reliable, equipped rescue team. Rescue services on other routes, is done by contacting the Park Headquarters who will then quickly send the rescue team. The mountain rescue fees covers rescue service from the top to the base of the mountain. We recommend flying doctor service membership (a $50 value) to cover from the base of the mountain to your hospital.

What kind of accommodation is provided for the 2 nights included in the climbing package?
The accommodation is at a mid class hotel that has rooms with en-suite bathrooms, mosquitoes nets, a bar and a restaurant. It is located in a quite neighborhood. For those who prefer something fancier, we can upgrade this to a five star hotel with an extra few dollars

What kind of accommodation is available during climbing?

Only Marangu route offers accommodation in a dormitory style huts- having beds and mattresses. All other routes offer accommodation in tents. There is a very limited number of climbers on Marangu route allowed, making a necessity for a well in advance booking.

How is cooking done on the mountain?

We use modern Kerosene stoves. These are very efficient (about 90% of the efficiency of gas, which is not always available here) and reliable. You can also feel satisfied that no firewood is being used which might damage the ecology of the mountain.

What's the food like during the climb?

Our typical food on the mountain includes:

Breakfast: coffee, tea, porridge, fruits, fruit juice, scrambled eggs/omelet, sausage, toast, margarine, honey and jam.

Lunch: hot tea, coffee, chips, sandwiches, biscuits, pancakes with honey or jam, and fruits

Dinner: soup, cooked meat or vegetarian meal (these include chicken/beef with rice, sliced fresh carrots and green beans, mashed potatoes, and salads), fruits, and fruit juice, and variety of hot drinks.

Do you accommodate people with dietary restrictions?

Absolutely! Our skilled cooks are happy to accommodate your dietary restrictions and/or allergies.

Who prepare the food on the mountain?

Skilled cooks serving as porters will prepare food for you. Also, they will boil, filter and refill your empty water bottles for you.

How is cooking done on the mountain?
All our meals are prepared on portable kerosene and gas stoves by our skilled cooks. Our low-impact policy prohibits us to use firewood on the mountain.

What about drinking water?

We recommend you drink about 4 -5 liters of fluid each day. Water is best, but fruit juices are a good supplement. Carry your own water bottle at all times, as dehydration is a real problem on the mountain. The air is very dry above 4000 meters so avoid panting and dry to breath through your nose. Control sweating by wearing removable clothing and pacing yourself. Sip fluids frequently. Monitor your urine; output should be at least 1.5 liters per day and the urine should be clear.

Can we buy drinking water/soda on the Kilimanjaro?

Yes, drinking water and soda can be bought on the mountain in Marangu route. It is much more expensive however than in Moshi town. However, there will be enough water for you up the mountain, and our stuff will boil, filter and refill your bottles.

What is the number of climbers?

Our climbs have a minimum and maximum number of 1 and 15 climbers respectively. In most cases, we have a maximum of 10 climbers, and average of 4 climbers

How many guides, and porters and cooks do we get?
All depends on the number of people in your group. You will have one leading guide, with assistant guides serving as porters, and porters (including skilled cooks). We guarantee enough number of porters for your luggage, food, and water.

Do you have luggage (weight/size/number) limitations on your climbs?

Unlike most other Companies, We do NOT have luggage limitation on our climbs. We also provide free storage for stuff which you do not want to bring it with you up on the mountain.

What if one of us gets sick and has to return?

In case one person gets sick and has to stay behind or even return, he or she will be accompanied by one of the assistant guides while other climbers goes on with the leading guide and other assistant guide (s).

Do you provide a free transfer if a climber had to return earlier than a scheduled day?

Unlike most other Companies who charge about $100, we provide a free transfer from the mountain to the hotel should a climber return earlier than planned.

What shots should I get?

For medical advice it is always best to consult your doctor. Please contact Tanzania embassy in your country for any updated info on minimum requirement to get into Tanzania/ Kenya if any.

Can you include airfare?

No, we recommend clients to book the international fare from their country to Kilimanjaro Airport.

What additional costs can I expect when I travel with you?

Our Land cost prices include almost everything. The only extra costs you will incure are tips, some of the climbing gears, and meals that are not listed on your itinerary.

How much is a good tip?
The recommended ones per day (from the whole group) are: Leading guide: $16, each assistant guide: $12, and each porter: $7. Off course you can pay more if you are particularly impressed and less if you are not.

Will i have a chance to interact with the local people of Tanzania?

Absolutely! You can even start talking to some of our staff in USA office, who were born in Kilimanjaro region, raised there, climbed the mountain several times and know it than anybody else!

Can I use credit card to pay for my climb?

We accept Visa and Master Card for your deposit ONLY. The balance is due 60 days prior to departure and is payable by check, wire transfer or money order.

What is the deposit amount to hold my space?

We do require a deposit of at least 30% person for Kilimanjaro trekking bookings.

When do I need to pay the balance of my trip?

The balance is due 90 days prior to the day your tour commences.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

If you cancel a tour, then the following cancellation fees will apply:
For all tours cancellations received more than 90 days prior to departure, $500 per person cancellation fee per tour or extension; 89-60 days, 20% of the tour price; 59-30days, 50% of tour price; 29-15 days, 75% of tour price; 14 days or less, 100% of tour price.

What happens if we have to cancel your trip?

In the unlikely event that we must cancel a trip due to some reasons beyond our control, you will receive a full refund. We have never cancelled our trips for years!

Do you cancel or change more in case other people cancel a trip?

Absolutely no! Once we receive your deposit, both price and departure are guaranteed.

I heard that the success rate on Kilimanjaro is less than thirty percent. Is this true?

Some people climb Kilimanjaro without knowing what they are letting themselves in for. Consequently they may be inadequately equipped and fed, and they then have a miserable and unsuccessful time. We make sure that you are properly informed and equipped, our success rate to the crater rim is 90%. Our success rate to Uhuru peak is 85%. However, we always stress that the main reason to climb Kilimanjaro is to have a safe and enjoyable time. Reaching the summit is a bonus, but should never be seen as the sole aim of the climb.

How cold does it get on Kilimanjaro?

The temperature at the top of the mountain can vary widely. Sometimes it is only a degree or two below freezing, but visitors should be prepared for possible temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius, especially in conjunction with wind.

Why, when looking at different companies who offer Kilimanjaro climbs that follow much the same route over the same number of days, do I find such a variance in the cost?
The major sources of cost variations are the money spent on food, off-mountain accommodation, porter and guide wages, tents and the cost of getting to the mountain. JOURNEYS is determined to provide the best food, best guides and porters, best tents and equipment, top quality before-and-after-climb accommodation, a full professional pre-climb orientation, insurance for all staff and inclusion of all park permits, meals, transfers and local hosting costs. On some of the least expensive trips food is minimal and often prepared by frying. Because guides and porters are expected to cover part of their wages with tips, these companies cannot attract the best staff. Often they do not provide full warm clothing to staff. The mountain is hard on tents which are expensive in Tanzania meaning that tents on cheap trips are often worn or dirty. Our approach is not to provide the cheapest trip, but rather to do everything we can to increase the likelihood you will reach the summit and enjoy the overall experience with a staff of people who are well qualified and compensated for the extraordinary assistance they provide to you.

What should I know about altitude sickness?

There are different types of altitude sickness. "Acute mountain sickness" is very common, and is not as frightening as its name suggests. The symptoms are headaches, nausea and vomiting, though not everyone suffers from all the symptoms. Normally, symptoms fade after a few hours, but if they do not a climber may need to turn back, especially if vomiting is leading to dehydration. Any enjoyment to be had from the climb will have disappeared by now anyway.

A much more serious type of altitude sickness is called oedema. This is a build-up of fluid in the body, and when the fluid collects in the lungs or the brain a serious condition develops which requires immediate action in the form of descent to a lower altitude, where recovery is usually miraculously fast.

In most cases AMS can be avoided by following guidelines: drink lots of water, walk slowly, stay warm, eat well. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the various affects that altitude can cause.

During your pre-climb briefing, we describe altitude sickness to you in detail, and advise you how to cope with it. The most important thing is not to fear it, but to respect it and to know how to deal with it. Our guides have seen every condition that the mountain produces, and they will always know how to deal with problems.

Do you pay wages to your guides and porters?

Yes, we do pay them wages, and we pay well above the levels recommended by Kilimanjaro National Park. Our staff all know that tips from climbers are discretionary. If you do want to give a tip, we always ask you not to do it on the mountain but back at the hotel after the climb. There everything is relaxed and open.
Medicines

Mosquito sprays and creams

Not very useful on the mountain itself. But when you get back down again it is useful to have some “protection” against the Anopheles mosquito. We recommend Autan.

Malaria prevention

Please consult your doctor regarding malaria prophylaxis.

Headache pills

paracet pills will help you in case of headaches.

Diamox

Diamox can be used to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Please try them first to see if you don't get too many side effects.

Sun cream

we recommend creams with SPF 30, as the sun near the equator is very strong. Don’t forget to have something to protect your lips as well.

Personal medical supplies (optional):

As your tour leaders, we will carry a group medical kit.

Personal Items & Toiletries

toothpaste & tooth brush, body lotion, toilet paper and other personal hygiene items.

Tipping

The tips below are purely given as a guideline, to your discretionary. We recommend the following amounts are not exceeded except in special circumstances:
Tips for Kili staff, based on 2 people climbing

* guide 12 US$ per day (1 guide)
* assistant guide 10 US$ per day (1 assistant)
* cook 10 US$ per day (1 cook)
* per porter 7 US$ (6 or 7 porters for 2 clients)

For two people climbing Kilimanjaro we send the following staff
o 1 guide
o 1 assistant guide
o 1 cook
o 7-9 porters

So for 2 people climbing tips are around 25 US$ per person per day

Thank you and enjoy

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes - Kilimanjaro Tanzania - best time to climb

Marangu Route 8 Days  Affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola route", Marangu is by far the most popular route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. This could partly be as a result of the fact that the Marangu is the least expensive route, but more so, perhaps the fact that it is possible to do the Marangu route in 6 days, thereby getting to the summit one day earlier than on the Machame route.

Machame Route  Sometimes called the Whisky Route. This is a popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Icefields to join the Barafu Route to the summit.

Umbwe Route  The Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Kilimanjaro. It is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful.

Lemosho Route  This is the longest and most remote route to Kilimanjaro. After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route. Groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other game.

Rongai Route  This remote and less frequently used route is the second easiest route to Kilimanjaro. The approach to the mountain is from the less-forested north side and the descent is by the Marangu Route. There are several variations, the one described below is a longer route taking in Mawenzi Tarn.

Shira Route  The Shira route, approaches Kilimanjaro’s summit from the west and crosses the caldera of Shira Volcano before heading beneath the southern ice fields of Kibo. The route is seldom used by other trekkers and so your initial two days on the mountain are less crowded than on most other routes.

Mount Kenya Climbing  At 5,199 m, Mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa. It is an ancient extinct volcano, during whose period of activity (3.1–2.6 million years ago) it is thought to have risen to 6,500 m. There are 12 remnant glaciers on the mountain, all receding rapidly, and four secondary peaks that sit at the head of the U-shaped glacial valleys. With its rugged glacier-clad summits and forested middle slopes, Mount Kenya is one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa. The evolution and ecology of its afro-alpine flora also provide an outstanding example of ecological processes. There are three main routes, which penetrate the forest and the moorland. The routes are Naromoru, Sirimon and Chogoria and each of which has something different to offer. Naromoru is the fastest route to point Lenana but not as scenic as the other two. Mt. Kenya's Nelion Summit, Batian Summit and Point Lenana

Mount Kenya Climbing Routes
Sirimon down Sirimon  A more gradual trek to the summit, traversing areas of rich forest cover before emerging into the sprawling moorlands. This hike is usually rated as the easiest among the short trips and is quite popular with persons attempting to reach an altitude exceeding 4000m for the first time. It is a good choice for large trekking groups as it follows the same trail up and down, making it convenient for those who are unable to reach the summit to stay behind at lower camps to wait for the rest of the group to complete the trip then descend together. Unless preferred, camping is not necessary as accommodation is available in a lodge and mountain huts throughout the trip.

Mt Kenya Climb Sirimon down Chogoria  On this Mount Kenya climbing experience, you ascend via the dry and little used Sirimon Trail and descend on the scenic Chogoria Trail. You reach point Lenana (4985 m), the highest point accessible to walkers, and return to base. Mount Kenya is Africa's second highest mountain. Above the habitable altitude, you find a rainforest zone, abundant with many tree species and wildlife too. Further up is open moorland, and beyond is the snow line where vegetation is sparse. Finding snow on the equator was a great surprise for the first Europeans to get to East Africa.

Sirimon down Narumoru  The Naro Moru route is the fastest and therefore also the most popular route onto the mountain, being used by many of the tour and outfitting companies guiding clients up to Point Lenana.

Mount Meru Climbing Mount Meru is one of Africa's most beautiful volcanoes, and it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,5685m, the third highest in Africa.
The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s gem. This prime location gives walkers the opportunity to spot some of the birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. The ascend is quite steep, the route to the summit passes over streams, through parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone and moorland. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand feet below in the crater. Weather permitting, Kilimanjaro can be seen in the West. There are two huts available to climbers on the mountain and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb Meru is between October and February. But also June to September, while it is colder then.

3 Days Masai Mara Lodge/ Camping Safari
Masai Mara, Kenya
This famous wildlife park is a top safari location, and one of the natural wonders
of the world, being the site of the annual wildebeest migration..

3 Days Amboseli Lodge/ Camping Safari or Tsavo Safari to Mombasa
Amboseli National Park, one of Kenya's oldest park, is located near the Kenya and
Tanzania border, "in the shadow" of Africa's highest mountain, the snow capped Kilimanjaro.

The park is known for its wildlife, especially it's prolific elephant population.  Amboseli also hosts the big cats, herbivores and numerous bird species including
flamingo and a variety of plains game.

Samburu Reserve, established in 1985, is an arid, hilly region with riverine forests, doum palms, acacia woodland and scrubland, offering a dramatic and rugged landscape in a rather remote location of Kenya - which is precisely the attraction of this reserve - fewer tourists in a wildlife rich, desert like setting amidst a colourful local tribe.

Best months for trek Mount Kilimanjaro

The best months for climbing are January, February, and September as they are the warmest months and almost clear of clouds, though one could easily succeed throughout the year.
April and beginning of May could get heavy rain or snow, but it could be worth it if you want a quiet clear mountain, as views are very good.
Also great are June to August (though colder), and November/December (could be wetter).
Through September and October it gets steadily warmer. October is particularly good if you want little or no rain, mild weather and few people on the mountain.
January to March are the warmest months, almost clear of clouds except of occasional brief rain showers, followed by the main rainy season during April & May. The temperatures will still be up, but massive clouds will block visibility, on top it might snow and heavy rains occur on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.
