The first
written reference to Mt. Kilimanjaro was by Ptolemy but even so, Africa's
highest mountain and the highest free standing mountain in the world
remained relatively unknown to the outside world until 1848. Snow capped and
shrouded by clouds, the local Chagga people called it 'Kilema Kyaro' meaning
'that which cannot be conquered' or 'that which makes a journey impossible.'
Today, it is the dream of every adventurer to conquer its summit and stand
on the "roof of Africa."
There are five main routes to the top -- Marangu, Shira, Mweka, Umbwe and
Machame. The most popular route is the Marangu Route which starts at the
Marangu Gate at 6000 ft. and has huts and facilities along the way. The
other routes are more scenic with stunning views of the glaciers.
They are also more challenging for the advanced trekker, requiring special
permission and the use of tents. Regardless of the route taken, the vistas
are magnificent and the flora and fauna of the different life zones are
fascinating.
Rain forests give way to moorlands and alpine meadows until these, too, give
way to an alpine desert where lichens cling tenuously to rocks. The
landscape, though desolate, is hauntingly beautiful as you walk among the
clouds.
The mountain consists of three volcanoes: Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo. Shira
became extinct and collapsed leaving a series of rocky ridges on the Shira
plateau. Mawenzi is dormant and its jagged peaks require a technical climb.
Uhuru Peak, (19,340 ft.) is Kibo's highest peak but one is considered to
have "conquered" the mountain by reaching Gillman's Point at 18,635 ft.
Best Times to Go:
January, February and September. These are the drier months and there are
fewer hikers.
Clothing/Gear:
Comfortable clothing will suffice for the first two days. However, many
underestimate the frigid conditions of the mountain above 12,000 feet. Warm
clothing is essential and should include a down-filled parka with hood,
fleece shirts, warm pants, waterproof and windproof shell pants, thermal
underwear, mittens, wool hat or balaklava and scarf. Good walking shoes and
socks are appropriate to about 15,000 feet but sturdy hiking boots with warm
socks and sock liners are needed to challenge the summit. At this altitude
sun protection is necessary so bring snow goggles, dark glasses, suntan
lotion and a hat with a brim to protect your face and neck. Also necessary
are your water bottle, sleeping bag, trail mix, energy snacks and candy
bars, flashlight, camera with film and personal toiletries including toilet
paper. None are available past the park gate.
It is better to bring your own gear. Equipment can be rented at the Marangu
gate but the quality may not be the best and you run the risk of having to
use shell pants repaired with electrical duct tape!
Children ten and under are allowed to climb to Mandara Hut at 8,858 feet.
Otherwise, good health and physical fitness are the only requirements for a
Kilimanjaro climb.
Climbing Mount
Kilimanjaro - Marangu Route (6 day)
This is the easiest route to the summit of Kilimanjaro,
sometimes called the Coca-Cola Route. The Marangu route
takes you at a gentle pace through forests, moorlands
and then across The Saddle, a high-altitude desert
separating the main summit, Kibo, 5896m, from craggy
Mawenzi, 5149m, to Kibo Hut. From here an early start is
made for the ascent to Uhuru Point (the highest top of
Kibo). The path zig-zags up steep scree which is easier
to climb when frozen. The views from the crater rim at
Gillman's Point at dawn can be spectacular. Uhuru Peak
lies a further 1h30min. around the rim.
Accommodation on the mountain is in comfortable huts.
You will need a sleeping bag, warm clothes and walking
poles. This is a tough walking trip but within the
limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain
areas. An extra day for acclimatisation to the altitude
is recommended at Horombo from where there are various
walks to enjoy.

Mount Kilimanjaro -
All about the Mountain and Climbs
Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free standing, snow-covered
equatorial mountain. Now charted and climbed; stories of her
resident man-eating spirits are relegated to the realms of
folklore. But Mount Kilimanjaro continues to preserve a
mysticism that defies all recent knowledge of her slopes.
Images of the towering snow-covered cone rising majestically
from fertile green foothills have become a powerful motif of
Tanzania's extraordinary extremes. Few could deny a very
distinct sense of awe when the cloud clears to reveal a glimpse
of the towering peaks, shining bright in the equatorial sun.
A Towering Life Force
Kilimanjaro represents a powerful life force for the local
Chagga people and all those who have made their lives around
this mountain, providing rich volcanic soils for agriculture and
an endless source of pure spring waters.
Climbing Kilimanjaro
One of the most amazing aspects of the mountain in the present
day is the accessibility of its peak to climbers with no
mountain climbing equipment or real previous experience of
scaling such heights.
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain that regular tourists can
climb, although it remains a considerable feat of human
endurance! The breathable oxygen at the top is less than half
the amount than is common at sea level, and climbers cover at
least eighty kilometres on nothing but their own two feet over
the five days it takes to reach the top and return.
Preserving the Mountain
The number of climbers has escalated to over a thousand a year
during the last century, quite a development since Hans Meyer
made history as the first European to scale the highest point of
Kilimanjaro in 1889. The increasing numbers each year have made
it necessary for the National Park to insist that all climbs are
pre-booked, and passes are no longer issued at the last minute
at the park gate.
Overall Fitness Required
Although it is possible to simply trek a route to the pinnacle
of Kibo without relying on professional climbing equipment, it
remains a hard and serious endeavour that requires a level of
physical fitness, stamina and a realistic awareness of the
potentially damaging effects of high altitudes. Many tour
operators request that clients consult a doctor before
attempting to scale the mountain, and have a physical check-up
for overall fitness.
Phases of the Climb; First Stage,Tropical Forest
With most of the old lowland forest now cultivated and settled,
the first experience of the mountain environment begins with the
dense vegetation of tropical montane forest between 1850m and
around 2800m. Cloud condensation mainly gathers around the
forest, so this area is usually damp or drenched with rainfall,
creating an intriguing mass of plant life and running rivers
between endemic tree species. The area of heath just beyond the
tree line also enjoys a relatively misty and damp environment as
cloud clings around the density of trees. This is covered with
heather and shrubs such as Erica Arborea and Stoebe
Kilimandsharica, and a number of dramatic looking Proteas.
Open Moorland
From around 3,200m a wide expanse of moorland extends beyond the
heath and the cloud line, so that here the skies are generally
clear, making the sunshine intense during the days and the
nights cool and clear. The climbing incline remains gentle, but
thinning oxygen provides less fuel to energise the muscles and
can dramatically slow the pace of walking. Hardy endemic species
of Giant Groundsels (Senecio) and Lobelia (Deckenii) towering up
to 4m high thrive in this moorland zone and give the landscape a
strangely primeval atmosphere.
Alpine Desert, Sparse Vegetation
Even higher, beyond 4,000m, this sensation intensifies as the
landscape develops into a more bizarre alpine desert, with sandy
loose earth and intense weather conditions and temperature
fluctuations so dramatic that barely any plant species survive
other than everlasting flowers, mosses and lichens. Only the odd
lichen survives beyond 5000m, after Kibo Huts and beyond the
Saddle, where the landscape is predominantly rock and ice
fields. Here, climbers experience the final steep push to the
summit.
Saddle to Summit
The easterly routes, Marangu, Mweka, Loitokitok and Rongai all
converge west of the saddle near Gillmans Point, between the
peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Kibos crater is roughly circular with
an inner cone extending to 5,800m, (100m lower than the summit
at Uhuru Peak). At the centre an inner crater with walls between
12 and 20 m high contains another concentric minor cone, the
centre of which falls away into the 360m span of the ash pit.
This is the 120 metre deep central core of the volcano, and
casts sulphurous boiling smoke from its depths despite the
frozen, snowy outskirts.
Planning your Kilimanjaro Climb
Kili climbs can be arranged for a variety of different routes
and with various options for accommodation. It is really well
worth spending time in the planning stages!
Marangu Route 8 Days
Affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola route", Marangu is by far
the most popular route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. This could
partly be as a result of the fact that the Marangu is the least
expensive route, but more so, perhaps the fact that it is
possible to do the Marangu route in 6 days, thereby getting to
the summit one day earlier than on the Machame route.
Machame Route Sometimes
called the Whisky Route. This is a popular route up steep paths
through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the
moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath
the glaciated precipices of the Southern Icefields to join the
Barafu Route to the summit.
Umbwe
Route
The Umbwe route is one of the
shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach.
It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on
Kilimanjaro. It is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively
fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful.
Lemosho
Route
This is the longest and most remote
route to Kilimanjaro. After beautiful forests and moorlands it
crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route.
Groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as
the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo,
elephant and other game.
Rongai
Route This remote and less frequently used route is
the second easiest route to Kilimanjaro. The approach to the
mountain is from the less-forested north side and the descent is
by the Marangu Route. There are several variations, the one
described below is a longer route taking in Mawenzi Tarn.
Shira
Route
The Shira route, approaches
Kilimanjaro’s summit from the west and crosses the caldera of
Shira Volcano before heading beneath the southern ice fields of
Kibo. The route is seldom used by other trekkers and so your
initial two days on the mountain are less crowded than on most
other routes.
